Diversity has direct and surprising positive effects on your business. Not only can it yield a range of beneficial impacts but it can also help limit some of the more extreme tendencies your teams may face. It is a proposition I recently put forward in an article for Acquisition International and one that I’d like to reflect on here.

I am currently working with two clients who suffer from opposite symptoms.
One organisation is drowning in action, people have no time to stop, everything is a priority and there is a frenzy of activity. The other organisation is slow, people take ages to get things done, and they sometimes get bored. Interestingly, I have found that they both suffer from an identical issue: a lack of empowerment.

I was recently discussing with a friend some of the changes that we have both seen in the workplace in the last 20 years. One of them was the mobile phone. I can still remember when fixed lines were the only way to contact clients. And it was fairly easy: I never used to struggle to talk to my clients over the phone – I sometimes had to leave a message but they would call back or I would call them back later myself.
